Strawberry Mochi Part 2,
The Real Original

Bet you've been waiting, huh? Sorry for making you wait after teasing that the real original was out there. Today I'm finally breaking it down like I promised. Short version first: the famous shops everyone pictures when they think of Yeosu strawberry mochi right now? They're not actually the original. The real original is Seonoksshi. Let me walk you through why, step by step.

Those famous shops everyone knows only blew up recently

These days, when people think Yeosu strawberry mochi, most picture the shops with lines forming near Yi Sun-sin Plaza. But those shops are said to have only gone nationally famous around 2020 to 2021. That's when they exploded in popularity among younger crowds through social media and word of mouth, and by 2022 they'd settled in as a must-eat Yeosu travel dessert, with weekend lines stretching dozens of meters. So the flashy strawberry mochi craze we all know? It's actually only a few years old. It feels like it should have a much longer history, but it turns out that's not really the case.

BY THE NUMBERS2020–2021The period Yeosu strawberry mochi is said to have gone nationally viral via social media

Of course, shops that have been making rice cakes in Yeosu go back much further than that. Some are said to be family businesses passed down through generations, and some apparently started out making other kinds of rice cake before eventually moving into strawberry mochi. But becoming known specifically as a 'strawberry mochi specialty shop,' the way it's known today, and having that name spread as Yeosu's signature dessert — that's clearly something that happened in just the last few years. So 'an old rice cake shop' and 'the original strawberry mochi shop' are actually two different stories.

But this place was there before all of that

Here's the part I actually wanted to tell you. Seonoksshi is said to have been making strawberry mochi in Yeosu since 2015. Since the now-famous shops only started taking off around 2020, that puts it well ahead of them. It just wasn't loud about it on social media, so not many people knew — but going purely by timing, this was the first to properly specialize in strawberry mochi in Yeosu. Once I found this out, I sat with it for a while. Being famous doesn't automatically make you the original, and being the original doesn't automatically make you famous.

BY THE NUMBERS2015The year Yeosu strawberry mochi's real original is said to have started making it

Blowing up first doesn't make you the original — starting first does.

When you think about it, this probably isn't unique to strawberry mochi, right? Wherever something suddenly trends and blows up, there's usually someone quietly behind it who started earlier but never got the credit. This seems to be exactly that case. Rather than pouring energy into posting and marketing, it seems like they spent that time just making one really solid strawberry mochi. Fame might have come late, if at all, but being first — that's the one thing I wanted to make sure got said.

Those photos from Part 1? All from this same place, actually

That whole-strawberry cross-section photo I showed you in Part 1, and the strawberry-tangerine-kiwi-Shine Muscat assortment shot — those were both from here, all along. I held back on saying so on purpose back then. Doesn't it hit differently looking at them again now? Knowing that single cross-section carries years built up since 2015, it looks a little different to me too.

Next time strawberry mochi comes up, go ahead and drop this story. Sure, those famous shops everyone knows are tasty too. But if someone asks who the real original is, now you can answer with confidence. Fame and being the original are just different things.
