Right Next to Yeosu's Busy Fishing Port, There's a Quiet Little Waterfront

Hi, I'm Sudal. Today I want to tell a slightly different kind of sea story from Yeosu. It's not as flashy as the usual tourist spots, but it's a place soaked in the everyday life of Yeosu's people — Gukdong Port and the waterfront park sitting right beside it. Did you know that right next to a busy port where boats come and go and seafood changes hands, there's a quiet space where you can unexpectedly sit and rest? Shall we take a slow look together?

Gukdong Port, Where Yeosu's Seafood Gathers

Gukdong Port is a fishing port located in Gukdong, and it's said to have ideal natural conditions as a harbor, since the many islands surrounding it block the waves and wind. Because of that, ships are said to dock here and lively fish auctions take place. It's known as one of Yeosu's representative seafood hubs and is said to have played a key role in the region's development, so it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it the heart of Yeosu's sea-based livelihood. Gukdong Port was designated a national fishing port in January 1979, so it's been watching over Yeosu's sea for a long time now.

And that's not all. Seafood processing plants and ship repair businesses are said to be clustered around Gukdong Port, along with ice-making, freezing, and refrigeration facilities, giving it the character of a truly multi-functional harbor. This was recognized in January 2013, when it was redesignated as a multi-functional fishing port, from what I've heard. When I think about how a boat comes in, fish gets processed, ice gets loaded, and everything gets shipped back out, all within this one harbor, it really does feel like a hardworking port.

But it would feel a little incomplete to stop the story at Gukdong Port. There's a really nice resting spot hiding right next door.

Gukdong Port Waterfront Park in Bongsan-dong, a Retreat for Yeosu Locals

Near Gukdong Port, in Bongsan-dong, there's a place called Gukdong Port Waterfront Park. Thanks to its quiet, laid-back atmosphere, it's said to be one of the spots Yeosu locals enjoy visiting often. It's still relatively unknown to tourists, which might be exactly why you can walk through it at such an easy pace. With palm trees and lush green lawns spread out, plus plenty of benches scattered around where you can sit and rest for a while, it sounds like a lovely place for a stroll.

If you walk all the way to the end of the park, a wide stretch of blue sea is said to open up before you. Standing there, you can apparently take in Yeosu's sea in full while feeling a cool breeze, which sounds like the perfect reward for a walk, right around the time you start to feel a little tired. It feels almost surprising to me that just a few steps away from the port's busy hum, you can meet the sea wearing such a completely different expression.

Walking around like this can also make you a little hungry. It turns out there's something prepared for that, too.

If You Get Hungry While Strolling, There Are Food Trucks by the Sea

Along the shore at Gukdong Port Waterfront Park, there are said to be food trucks licensed by the city of Yeosu. So if you get a little hungry while strolling, you can apparently grab a quick bite right there without having to go far. Standing there with a snack in hand, the wide blue sea spread out in front of you — doesn't just imagining that feel wonderfully relaxed? Walking, resting, eating, and looking out at the sea again — each step in that sequence seems like it would turn the day into a little trip of its own.

Gukdong Port isn't a flashy tourist attraction, but it's a place where you can see Yeosu's sea truly alive and in motion, and the waterfront park right beside it is a spot where you can catch your breath in the middle of all that activity. If you'd like to feel a side of Yeosu that feels a little more like Yeosu itself, sitting in the shade of a palm tree here and letting the sea breeze wash over you might be an even better choice than visiting one more famous attraction. Next time I go for a walk, I think I'll grab a snack from a food truck and sit down on one of those benches myself.
