I was a little surprised myself when I first heard about this place. That such a vast wetland could sit quietly in Yeosu, in an area tourists rarely set foot in. Today, let's unravel that quiet secret together.

410,000 Square Meters, Too Vast to Take In at a Glance

Gasari Eco Park sits at 327 Gwan-gi-gil, Sora-myeon, Yeosu, and its wetland area is said to reach about 410,000 square meters. That number might not mean much on its own, but if you imagine dozens of soccer fields stitched together, you'll get a rough sense of the scale. It's not an everyday sight, having such a vast wetland spread out where the sea meets a stream. Hearing about this scale made me wonder why a place like this stayed so unknown for so long. It sits some distance from Yeosu's famous tourist spots, so tourists rarely visit, and I've heard that even among Yeosu locals, not many people know this place. But I think that might actually be its real charm. Less touched by human hands, it stays quieter, and its nature remains that much more intact.

Wooden deck trails stretch out on both sides here, making it a great spot for a walk, from what I've heard. As you walk, you can take in a view of a quiet, old-fashioned fishing village, wide mudflats, and even the islands of the archipelago floating on the deep blue sea, all at once, so your eyes won't get bored for a moment. If it were me, I'd walk slowly, really slowly, taking in every bit of that scenery.

But this park isn't just beautiful, it's a place whose value has actually been officially recognized.

A Grade-1 Wetland, Recognized by the National Wetlands Center

Gasari Eco Park is said to have received a Grade-1 rating in a survey by the National Wetlands Center, based on a combination of criteria including biodiversity, naturalness, vegetation health, and scale and landscape value. This isn't just a place people call beautiful by word of mouth, it's a wetland whose value has actually been confirmed through survey and evaluation. Hearing this made me understand a little better why the scenery here is described as so intact and beautiful. The less human hands have touched it, the more the traces of nature growing and living at its own pace remain, just as they are. Personally, I think places like this deserve to be walked through more carefully, and with more gratitude.

And there's another way to enjoy this place besides walking, it turns out.

Great for Cycling, and for Sunsets Too

Gasari Eco Park also has a cycling course set up. I've heard you can rent a bike for a fee at the Yeosu YMCA Eco Education Center, near the Gasari reed field, so walking is nice, but if you'd like to cover more ground by bike, that could suit you well too. If it were me, I'd walk to slowly take in the wetland on the way there, and rent a bike for the breeze on the way back.

One more thing that makes this place special is the sunset. Since it's an area where the sea meets a stream, a wide wetland has formed, and this wetland blends so well with the surrounding scenery that sunset time is said to bring a truly fantastic view. Imagining the sunset spreading over the mudflats and wetland, I think you could fill your heart here just as much as at any famous sunset spot, without having to go anywhere else. It works as a drive course, a walking course, and a cycling course alike, so feel free to pick whichever suits your mood or schedule that day.
