Heading to Geumodo's Cliff Trail? Check the Ferry Schedule First
where the ferry schedule is everything
If you really want to see Yeosu's sea properly, don't just gaze at it from the mainland — take a step out to the islands. Countless islands, big and small, float in the waters off Yeosu, and among them, Geumodo's Byeoreong-gil (Cliff Trail) stands out as one of the best for walking. It's a trail that runs along cliffs hugging the sea, and since this island isn't connected to the mainland by a bridge, you can only get there by boat. So today, before your feet, let Sudal remind you firmly to check the ferry schedule first. It's a completely different kind of fun from a quick drive-around trip.
What exactly is Byeoreong-gil that you need a boat to get there?
'Bireong' is local dialect for cliff, or precipice. True to its name, Byeoreong-gil is a trail that runs alongside cliffs dropping straight into the sea. Geumodo is an island belonging to Namyeon, Yeosu, and the cliff trail winds along the island's southern coastline. Wherever you look while walking — left or right — the sea is always in view on one side, so you find yourself stopping again and again. Like mainland trails, dirt paths and forest sections alternate, but then suddenly the view opens up and you hit a cliff section with the blue sea rolling beneath your feet. That single moment of scenery is why everyone takes a boat all the way out to this island. The trail wasn't made to be walked all in one go. It's divided into several sections, so you can pick and choose how much to walk based on your time and stamina. Some sections stretch on through gentle forest paths, while others skirt precariously close to the cliff edge. If it's your first time, I'd recommend not being too ambitious — just pick one short section. You'll get your fill of sea views on any section anyway.
Spring and Fall Are the Real Deal
This trail isn't bad to walk any time of year, but there's a season that's truly the best. In midsummer, the cliff sections have almost no shade, so you're exposed to the blazing sun the whole way, and you'll be drenched in sweat with your stamina draining fast. Add in the humidity, and it feels even tougher. In winter, the wind blowing in off the sea cuts sharp, and if it rains, the cliff path gets slippery, so you have to watch every step. Spring and fall, on the other hand, are different. In spring, the sunlight is warm but not scorching, and green sprouts up all over the island, keeping your eyes at ease the whole walk. In fall, the air clears up and the line between sea and sky comes into sharp focus, with cool breezes that keep you from tiring even on a long walk. Personally, I love spring and fall mornings best. If you start walking before the sun gets fully hot, the cliff sections are much easier to handle, and you get to watch the morning light spread out over the sea. If you absolutely have to go in summer or dead winter, be sure to pack plenty of water and a jacket.
The Ferry Schedule Is Your Itinerary
To get to Geumodo, you need to catch a boat from Baekya Pier in Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu. The crossing from the mainland to the island is quick, but the boat doesn't run all day long. It only operates at set times, and the number of sailings isn't exactly generous, so if you don't check the schedule ahead of time, you could end up in trouble. Sailing times can shift depending on the season or weather, and on days with strong winds or heavy fog, the whole schedule can get rearranged. So once you've picked your travel date, the first thing to do isn't searching for restaurants — it's checking that day's ferry schedule. On weekends or during peak season, when the pier gets crowded, seats can fill up early, so give yourself plenty of buffer time. Once you're on the island, you need to plan things in reverse. Instead of deciding which section to walk first, check what time the last boat leaves. Then work backwards from that time to plan your route. If you get lost in the scenery and lose track of time, you might end up waiting endlessly on the island for the next boat. This matters even more in seasons when daylight hours are shorter — build in extra buffer time.
Take Your Time and Enjoy the Walk
Byeoreong-gil isn't a trail for setting speed records. Listening to the waves crash below the cliffs, resting when you want to rest and stopping when you want to stop — that's the real way to enjoy this trail. There are resting spots along the way where you can take a sip of water and gaze out at the sea for a while. There aren't many shops on the island, so it's best to bring water and a light snack with you. Packing a snack and sharing it while sitting at a spot with a great view is another good way to enjoy this trail. Restrooms and stores aren't available in every section, so double-check before you set out that you've got everything you need. The sea you see from the mainland and the sea you look down on from the island's cliffs feel completely different. Looking down at the endless stretch of blue water beneath your feet, you finally feel like the trip to Yeosu was worth it. This isn't a place to swing by for a quick photo — it's a trail that deserves a whole half-day set aside for walking. Don't rush. Just keep an eye on the ferry schedule and take your time.

SOODAL's Tip · If you're planning to go to Geumodo's Byeoreong-gil, check that day's ferry schedule before you leave. Sailing times can change depending on the season and weather, so plan your route around the last boat's departure time to stay safe.
