Did You Even Know What Yeosu Was? This Was Admiral Yi Sun-sin's Headquarters

If all you talk about is Yeosu's night sea, the Odongdo cable car, and gat-kimchi, there's one thing that's easy to miss: for a time during the Joseon dynasty, Yeosu was the heart of the navy that carried the fate of the entire nation on its shoulders. During the Imjin War, the actual headquarters where Admiral Yi Sun-sin held command — the Left Naval Command of Jeolla Province — stood right here in Yeosu, and nowhere else. For people born and raised in Yeosu, this is a story they've heard since childhood, but I've noticed that first-time visitors are often surprised to learn it at all. The night sea is lovely, the cable car is lovely, but once you know this story, walking through Yeosu feels different under your feet. Yeosu, the Real Headquarters of Admiral Yi Sun-sin

From 1592 to 1598, Joseon fought a long war known as the Imjin War. Most people have heard at least once how the Joseon navy, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, defended the seas during this war — but the actual headquarters, the command post where operations were planned, was right here in what is now Yeosu. At the time it was called the Jeolla Left Naval Command. Even though I was born and raised in Yeosu, it still amazes me every time I think about it: that the admiral stayed here, watching over the course of the war and issuing orders from this very place. This isn't some old story printed on a tourist signboard — it means that the middle of downtown Yeosu, where we now eat and go grocery shopping, was once that very spot. For me, someone who used to go out on boats and dive for a living, this fact makes me see Yeosu's sea in a whole new light.

A story often told alongside this is that the turtle ship was first built somewhere in this area. However, I understand that scholars are still divided on exactly where it was first constructed. So on this particular point, I'd rather not state it as settled fact, and just say that "this is how it has been passed down," to be careful. What I can say clearly is something else: Yeosu was the actual headquarters of the Jeolla Left Naval Command, and the front-line command post of the Joseon navy at that time stood right here, and nowhere else. On this fact alone, Yeosu was never just some obscure, quiet seaside town — it was a place on which the fate of the nation once rested.

Jinnamgwan, the National Treasure Still Standing on That Spot

The central building of that Jeolla Left Naval Command still stands today, right in downtown Yeosu. It's called Jinnamgwan. Written in Chinese characters, the name roughly means "the hall that pacifies the south," and even just from the name you can sense what kind of era this building has passed through. Jinnamgwan was a guest hall where the local government office received visitors and held events large and small, and it is said to have been built around 1599, just after the war ended. It is one of Yeosu's most representative historic structures, and today it stands as a cultural heritage site carefully protected under National Treasure designation.

Being designated a National Treasure means that this single building is considered one of the most precious heritage sites in the entire country. Standing in front of Jinnamgwan, its scale alone is extraordinary. The rows of massive wooden pillars are imposing on their own, and thinking about the more than 400 years piled up inside them naturally fills you with a sense of reverence. For the people of Yeosu, Jinnamgwan isn't just an old building. It's a place that, every single day as we pass by, reminds us that our town was once the front line defending the nation. I visited a few times on school field trips as a kid, and the weight I didn't understand back then feels completely different now that I've grown up and stand here again. Even today, when there's a big event in Yeosu, the front yard of Jinnamgwan naturally becomes the go-to meeting spot.

Laid out in this timeline, the history this land called Yeosu has passed through feels different all over again. It was the front line defending the nation in the very midst of war; once the war ended, a dignified guest hall rose on that same spot; and as the years passed, it now stands today as a National Treasure watching over downtown Yeosu. Jinnamgwan still stands exactly where it always has, right in the middle of downtown Yeosu, not far from Yi Sun-sin Square. It sits quietly along the path tourists take toward Odongdo or the night sea, so if you're willing, stopping by for a moment isn't difficult at all. I believe that simply standing beneath those great pillars and picturing that era for a moment will make your trip to Yeosu that much deeper.
