Heading to Yeosu's sea right now?
Here's what to pack first

Come late July, my phone won't stop ringing. 'Is Yeosu's sea open for a swim yet?' 'Which beach has opened?' Everyone's already booked their summer vacation, but they wait until the night before to ask these questions. Yeosu has everything from beaches you can reach straight by car to island beaches you need a boat for, so some are already packed while others are still quiet. Instead of walking you through each beach one by one today, I'm rounding up what people actually want to know right now — which beaches are open, what to pack, and whether you're staying on the mainland or heading out to an island. Skim through all the beach info at once and get ready to head out today.

Which Beaches Are Open Right Now

Yeosu's beaches don't all open on the same day. Mosageum Beach, in Ocheon-dong, is generally open from early July through mid-August. The shoreline runs about 225m long and 30m wide — not huge — but the mix of fine sand, pebbles, and rocky shore means plenty of people swim for a while, then move on to sea bream fishing. Manseongri Black Sand Beach sits in an easy-to-reach spot from downtown Yeosu, so it stays steadily busy the whole summer peak season. The beaches around Geomundo are on an island you can only reach by boat, so their opening dates and operating conditions can run on a different schedule than the mainland beaches.

So don't just search 'Yeosu beach' as one broad term — plug in the exact name of the beach you're headed to and check whether it's actually open before you leave. Good news is, late July through early August is peak season, when most of Yeosu's beaches are open, so there's not much to worry about. But once mid-August passes, some beaches start closing one by one, so if your trip falls in late summer, get in the habit of double-checking a day or two before you leave. If you're traveling with kids especially, that one quick check can save you a wasted trip.

Mainland Beach or Island Beach — This Decides What You Pack

Yeosu's summer sea splits into two main routes: beaches you can drive straight to, and island beaches you need a boat for. Mosageum Beach and Manseongri Black Sand Beach are easy to reach by car from downtown Yeosu, so a day trip works fine — leave in the morning, swim, and head back to your lodging by evening. They're also equipped with parking, restrooms, and showers, so you can show up without much gear. If you only have a short window, this is the far more comfortable option.

Heading out to the Geomundo beaches is a different story. You'll need to check the ferry schedule first, and once you're on the island, the tides and boat times will dictate when you can leave, so give yourself plenty of buffer. In exchange, you get a much quieter sea with far fewer people — that's the charm of island beaches. If your plan is a quick swim and back home the same day, go mainland. If you want to settle into a quiet sea for a day or more, head for the islands. That's the first call to make for an easier summer trip.

What to Pack — Check This Before You Go

Some of Yeosu's beaches are well-equipped, others are fairly bare-bones, so packing right matters. A shade tent or umbrella, aqua shoes, sunscreen, spare clothes, and towels are basics no matter which beach you pick. Aqua shoes especially matter at spots like Mosageum Beach, where the mix of pebbles and rocky shore can easily hurt bare feet. If you're heading out to an island beach, there may not be a convenience store or market nearby, so it's safer to bring plenty of water and snacks with you before you go.

🦦 SOODAL's checklist
✓Basics: shade tent/umbrella, aqua shoes, sunscreen
✓Island beaches lack convenience stores — pack plenty of water and snacks
✓Heading to an island? Check the ferry schedule first, and build in buffer for tides and return time
✓Peak-season parking lots fill up — arrive early in the morning

Beyond Swimming — What's Also in Season Right Now

Yeosu's summer sea isn't just about jumping in and out of the water. Right now is also peak season for water sports like kayaking and snorkeling, and plenty of people show up for camping and fishing too. Mosageum Beach is a known spot for sea bream, so it's common to see people swim for a while and then cast a line. Beaches with a grassy area or camping-friendly spot behind the sand see a steady stream of campers pitching tents and staying overnight through the whole summer. For one stretch of the season, Yeosu's sea hits peak season with people trying to fit in swimming, fishing, and camping all at once.

That said, since all of this involves water, safety is non-negotiable. For water sports like kayaking or snorkeling, always wear a life vest, and where possible, go through an operator that provides safety gear and instructor guidance. Even at beaches with calm waves, don't let your guard down while watching kids swim — keep your eyes on them at all times. If you want your summer sea trip to stay a happy memory instead of turning into an accident, this is the one place you shouldn't cut corners.

Peak season at the sea only feels quiet if you came prepared.

SOODAL's Tip · If you're planning to visit an island beach, book your ferry ahead of time and make sure to confirm the return boat schedule before you leave. Miss it, and your whole day's plan falls apart.
