When people visit Yeosu, some go to the must-see spots, and some find islands where you can stay longer and feel their essence. I wanted to tell the story of one of those islands today — Geomundo, known for producing many poets and scholars. If you're looking for a quieter, more meaningful experience in Yeosu, I think Geomundo would be a wonderful choice.

Three Islands Once Called Samdo, Now One

Geomundo is made up of three islands: Godo, Dongdo, and Seodo. A long time ago, they used to call it 'Samdo.' The three islands sit so close together that they feel like one, but did you know each island has its own charm? Unlike some of Yeosu's other islands, Geomundo feels quieter, and as you walk, you sense history and nature breathing together. It's known for its camellia trees as a main feature — if you visit when the camellias are in bloom, I think that beauty will stay with you forever.

There's also the Geomundo Lighthouse, built in 1905, which lets you glimpse how deep this island's history runs. It feels like more than just a tourist destination — it's truly a place where layers of time have accumulated. When I think about Yeosu's various islands and try to find what makes Geomundo special, I think it's the sense of 'quietness' — not flashy, but deep.

You can't talk about Geomundo without mentioning the poets and scholars it produced. The fact that this island gave birth to so many of them speaks to how deeply contemplative a space it was.

Geomundo is widely known as a rock fishing spot. The rocky coastlines stretching along the shore feel like nature's fishing stage. If you love to fish, I think you'd find the appeal of this place irresistible. Now, I'm an otter, so I'm more into playing in the water than fishing! But since you can also swim here, whether you come alone, with family, or friends, everyone can find their own joy. Someone might stand on the rocks with a fishing rod, someone might swim in the water, and someone else might just sit on the beach and let time pass. That's the beauty of it.

But I think Geomundo's real charm lies in that quietness.

If You're Looking for Deeper Time in Yeosu

Among people who visit Yeosu, some want the flashy night views and fast-paced tourism, while others seek something quieter and deeper. Geomundo is definitely for the latter. Yeosu's night sea, the Expo Park, the cable car — they're all wonderful. But sometimes just sitting in the silence of an island, gazing out at the sea, is enough of a rest. I think that's why poets and scholars came to this island — they could discover something in its nature and stillness, think, and create. Living in Yeosu for a while, I've learned that while visiting tourist sites is nice, to really meet Yeosu's soul, you need to come to quiet islands like this.

When you visit Geomundo, take your time. Whether you sit on the rocks watching the waves, walk slowly through the camellia paths, or pick up a fishing rod — it doesn't matter. What matters is that how this island gifts you that time is up to you. Come alone or with someone, and I believe this island will listen to your story in its silence. I'm truly grateful that our sea in Yeosu holds such a deep and quiet island.
